Resource Mobilization Community of Practice (CoP)

As Protection International continues to grow and diversify its funding base to support the vital work of protecting human rights defenders globally, there is an increasing need to enhance internal coordination, knowledge sharing, and capacity in resource mobilization. Currently, efforts are often led in silos or limited to specific teams or regions, missing opportunities for shared learning, strategic alignment, and innovation.

To respond to this need, we propose the creation of a Resource Mobilization Community of Practice (CoP): an internal space where colleagues across regions, roles, and levels can come together regularly to exchange experiences, co-develop tools, strengthen skills, and support one another in securing and sustaining resources for our collective mission. Resources Mobilization Community of Practice (CoP) proposes the formation of an internal, collaborative group comprising individuals from across Protection International (PI) who are actively engaged in or interested in enhancing their skills and effectiveness in fundraising and resource mobilization. The primary objective of this Community of Practice is to foster a dynamic environment for collective learning and mutual support. This will be achieved through:

  • Knowledge Sharing: Creating a platform for members to openly exchange successful strategies, lessons learned, best practices, and valuable insights gleaned from their diverse experiences in securing resources.

  • Skill Building: Facilitating opportunities for members to develop and refine key fundraising competencies through workshops, peer-to-peer learning, and access to relevant tools and resources. This includes areas such as proposal writing, donor cultivation, grants management, and diversified funding approaches.

  • Mutual Support and Collaboration: Cultivating a supportive network where members can offer guidance, troubleshoot challenges, and collaborate on joint initiatives to collectively increase PI's capacity to attract and manage financial resources. This will ultimately contribute to the sustainability and expansion of PI's vital work.

Currently, our fundraising initiatives operate in a siloed manner. Each team or department often pursues funding independently, leading to a fragmented approach. This lack of centralized coordination not only creates inefficiencies but also results in significant missed opportunities for valuable peer learning. When fundraising strategies, successes, and challenges are not shared across the organization, we lose out on the collective intelligence and experience that could significantly enhance our overall fundraising effectiveness. Without a platform for exchange, teams are unable to learn from each other's successful approaches, adapt best practices, and avoid repeating past mistakes. This ultimately hinders our ability to secure optimal funding and achieve our organizational goals.

To address these critical shortcomings, the establishment of a dedicated Community of Practice (CoP) for fundraising will be instrumental. This CoP will serve as a vital platform for fostering improved coordination among all fundraising stakeholders. By bringing together individuals involved in fundraising from various parts of the organization, the CoP will facilitate regular communication, knowledge sharing, and collaborative strategy development. This coordinated approach will enable us to identify and capitalize on previously missed opportunities for peer learning. Through the CoP, members will be encouraged to share their experiences, present successful case studies, discuss challenges, and collectively brainstorm innovative solutions. This collaborative environment will empower teams to learn from each other's insights, adapt successful strategies to their own contexts, and collectively elevate the overall standard of our fundraising efforts. Furthermore, the CoP will foster a sense of shared purpose and collective responsibility, ensuring that our fundraising endeavors are strategically aligned and mutually reinforcing. Ultimately, this enhanced coordination and knowledge exchange will significantly strengthen our ability to attract and secure the necessary resources to further our mission.

The main goals:

The CoP is designed to empower all members of the organization by fostering a dynamic environment of shared knowledge and collaborative action. Our primary objectives are:

  • Foster Mutual Learning and Knowledge Exchange: To cultivate a vibrant learning ecosystem where every member, irrespective of their geographical location or organizational role, feels empowered to contribute, share insights, and learn from the collective experience. This involves regular exchange of best practices, lessons learned, and innovative strategies in resource mobilization, ensuring that the entire organization benefits from diverse perspectives and expertise.

  • Enhance Funding Alignment and Strategic Partnerships: To significantly improve the organization's capacity to attract and secure funding that is not only substantial but also deeply aligned with our core values, mission, and strategic priorities. This goal emphasizes developing a more sophisticated understanding of donor landscapes, refining our value proposition, and building stronger, more strategic relationships with funding partners who share our vision.

  • Develop and Share Comprehensive Resources and Tools: To create, curate, and widely disseminate a rich repository of invaluable tools and resources. This includes, but is not limited to, expertly crafted proposal templates, detailed donor intelligence, successful case studies, practical guides on grant writing, and innovative fundraising methodologies. The aim is to equip every member with the necessary instruments to effectively engage in resource mobilization efforts.

  • Facilitate Collaborative Funding Initiatives and Mutual Support: To cultivate a spirit of active collaboration and mutual support among all members when pursuing potential funding opportunities. This objective seeks to move beyond individual efforts towards a more integrated and synergistic approach, where teams and individuals work together, share leads, and strategically combine their strengths to maximize our chances of securing vital resources.

What We Hope to Achieve Through the CoP:

Through the consistent and dedicated application of these goals, the Resources Mobilization CoP envisions several transformative outcomes that will significantly bolster our organizational capacity and impact:

  • More Consistent and Equitable Fundraising Across All Regions: We anticipate a notable improvement in the consistency and effectiveness of fundraising efforts across all our operational regions. This means reducing disparities in funding success and ensuring that all regional offices have the support and resources needed to meet their fundraising targets, leading to a more stable and predictable financial foundation for the entire organization.

  • Increased Confidence and Proficiency in Donor Engagement and Proposal Development: A key outcome will be a significant boost in the confidence and skill levels of all staff members when engaging with donors and developing compelling proposals. Through workshops, peer learning, and access to best practices, individuals will feel more adept at articulating our mission, showcasing our impact, and effectively persuading potential funders of our value.

  • A Comprehensive and Accessible Collection of Tools, Donor Insights, and Fundraising Know-How: We aim to establish a centralized, easily accessible, and regularly updated repository that serves as a one-stop shop for all fundraising-related information. This "super handy collection" will encompass practical tools, in-depth donor intelligence, successful fundraising methodologies, and a wealth of shared knowledge that empowers every team member to excel in their resource mobilization endeavors.

  • A Stronger Culture of Collaboration and Collective Responsibility in Resource Mobilization: Ultimately, the CoP seeks to foster a deeply ingrained culture of collaboration and shared responsibility for securing resources. This means moving beyond isolated efforts to a more unified approach where everyone feels invested in and contributes to the collective goal of resource mobilization, leading to a more resilient and impactful organization. The "stronger vibe of working together on getting resources" will translate into more integrated strategies, shared successes, and a powerful sense of collective achievement.
